Model Aeroplanes

Hundreds of excellent model airplane kits have been designed and sold over the decades since Jetex was born.  We've collected information on a few of them here.

Simple stick model planes for Jetex power

Jetex-powered craft can be ultra-simple, as with the balsa stick models in these photos.

The following chart is an attempt to list all commercial Jetex airplane kits that have been produced; some are currently available.  Please let us know if there's another kit not yet listed.  If you have Jetex kits for sale, by all means let us know so we can post your materials here.  (Click on links to see images.)

The Hawker Hunter, Grumman Panther, NA Sabre, and MiG 15 are classics from the Keil Kraft Junior Scale series of the 1950s.  These four scale freeflight models by KeilKraft are designed for Powermax Jet-X motors.   All are built-up stick and tissue ships of Solarbo balsa, with molded plastic canopies.  The quality of material in the new (reissue) kits is better than in the original versions. The Hunter, Panther and Sabre have 1/24-inch [1 mm] sheet, as in the originals.

The very popular Hunter is one of the hardest to fly. (It has the least wing area, and the tail rigging angle might be too large.)  This model (like the Swift) has the fuselage bult up on two keels slotted to take bulkheads, side frames, nose blocks, etc.

The Panther, which is a straight-wing, requires an exaggerated dihedral.

The Sabre is a good flier.  To save weight, fewer ribs are used than might be expected, and the wings are quite fragile.  1/24-inch [1 mm] sheet formers are used.  The indicated dihedral angle may be reduced somewhat, and the plane still flown well.

The MiG 15 is perhaps the best of these kits.  It is easy to build, and quite attractive.  It has a 15" [38 cm] span.  (These notes mostly from Terry Kidd.)

The Lightning is a large model with a lot of wood in the construction.  Perhaps a bit oversized for the Jetex 50.

The Me 163 is a very nice reproduction, with some vacuum-formed parts.  Also a bit small for the Jetex 50 motors.

Electra car kit

This is a reissue, by Monogram, of a nice 1959 plastic kit.  They can be found throughout the US today, selling for from $4 to 12, or more.  The model fits either a Jetex 50 or a CO2cartridge, has guides for thread racing and RTP, and is easy to build.  Note the precautions required when working with plastic!  (Click images to see full-size illustrations.)

Boats

Sold on eBay Nov 2002 for $82.00 (lot included Jetex 50 motor), this 15 inch long boat was "in great condition with no damage". Vendor knew "nothing about this type of item". "Box with contents [presumably the Scorpion motor box] does show some damage to one corner."
