The Sebel Atom 35 scale series

1960 saw a late blooming from Sebel of scale model kits in the 'Tailored' tradition, specifically designed for the smaller Atom 35.

Model Aircraft, in November 1960, expressed its approval of the new arrivals, saying:

The traditional Jetex type of moulded shell fuselage construction is employed, with ready coloured sheet balsa flying surfaces of about 9 in. span. We found the construction a bit "fiddley" and a beginner may well be discouraged by this before the model is completed. However, for those who "stay with it", the finished job is quite attractive.

They certainly fly well, and will, undoubtedly, out-last most tissue covered models which might justify the rather high price of 7s. 6d. per kit. They are ideal for indoor R.T.P. club meetings during the winter months.

In contrast to the 'Tailored Series, there was no attempt to conceal the motor, somewhat detracting from the detailed scale appearance.

De Havilland Sea Vixen

Temco TT-1

  Dimensions of the TT-1 were:
   Length 9"
   Span 9¼"

The photograph gives a good idea of its actual size.

Sebel's advertising informed the prospective buyer that "The fuselages and the wings of these new small-scale kits are already beautifully coloured, as well as being pre-finished and pre-cut, and are ready for the fastest possible assembly. Fuselages are pre-formed of specially impregnated fibre, giving full realistic shape and strength, and wings are of finest balsa." The degree of pre-finishing is plain in Andy Blackwell’s photograph of the complete kit.

Specifications of the Sea Vixen were:
   Length 10½"
   Span 9"
Weight with empty motor ½ oz.

Text on the box spoke of the "formed impregnated fibre fuselage shells". Rocky Simmonds, who contributed the photograph, noted that both fuselage and solid sheet wings were "all a bright green".
